Hamsa India (Amcom) designs its business practices with an awareness that every electronic product has a life beyond its years of active use. As a company operating in the security and surveillance sector, we take our part in reducing the environmental and health impact of electronic waste seriously, and we align our approach with India’s e-waste regulations.
E-waste, short for electronic waste, describes electrical and electronic equipment — along with rejected parts from its manufacture or repair — that has reached the end of its usable life and is set aside for disposal. It covers a wide range of everyday and industrial products, from household appliances and computers to networking and surveillance hardware such as cameras, recorders and switches. As dependence on electronic devices continues to grow, so does the volume of e-waste produced each year, and international assessments place global generation in the tens of millions of tonnes annually. Much of this waste contains materials that can be harmful to both ecosystems and human health, which is why it needs to be handled differently from ordinary household refuse.
Recovering usable materials from discarded electronics reduces the pressure on raw resources that are becoming harder to source. Reusing what is already in circulation is an important part of reducing overall waste.
Disposing of e-waste through proper scientific methods limits the pollution it would otherwise cause. Manufacturing with recovered materials also tends to generate less air and water pollution than relying solely on virgin raw materials.
Electronic products often contain metals such as copper, aluminium and other recoverable materials. As virgin resources become scarcer, e-waste becomes an increasingly practical secondary source of these materials.
Substances found in electronic waste — including lead, cadmium, chromium, brominated flame retardants and polychlorinated biphenyls — can pose health risks through direct contact, inhalation of fumes released during unsafe handling, or accumulation in soil, water and food sources.
Children are more vulnerable to exposure from hazardous e-waste materials due to their higher relative intake of air, water and food, and because their bodies are still developing. Exposure at a young age carries a higher risk of lasting harm to the nervous, immune, reproductive and digestive systems.
Components such as compressors and older display technologies can release harmful gases, and burning plastic or rubber components in the open contributes directly to air pollution.
Electronic products are engineered so that potentially hazardous internal components remain safely contained within their outer casing during normal use. When a device is accidentally broken or damaged, this protection can be compromised, allowing hazardous elements to leak into the surrounding environment. This is a particular concern where damaged electronics end up with informal or unregulated waste handlers rather than authorised recyclers, which is why consumers are encouraged to route any damaged device to a properly authorised e-waste recycler.
Hamsa India (Amcom)’s e-waste obligations are governed by the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, which bring e-waste generated in India into an organised, environmentally sound recycling system, moving it away from the informal sector, where limited safeguards typically result in higher pollution, lower material recovery and greater risk to workers and the environment.
Hamsa India (Amcom) is a registered Producer under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, administered by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
